Supergirl has made a resurgence on screens big and small, including a new CW television show starring Melissa Benoist as the title character (whose real name is Kara Zor-El), Mehcad Brooks as James Olson, and Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, Kara's adoptive sister. The show has been running since October 26th, 2015, and has been garnering fan love ever since. Kara has to fight hundreds of criminals that her mother, Alura, sentenced for imprisonment in the Phantom Zone, who all happen to be hiding on Earth – and worse, in National City, where Kara lives. But this isn't the first time Supergirl has been on the tube. Laura Vandervoort portrayed the character in the long-running Smallville series, and Melissa Benoist has reprised the role in crossover episodes with Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, and Arrow. The character, played by Helen Slater, also appeared in a 1984 movie, a spin-off of the Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve.
supergirl in comic books
Kara Zor-El was the first character to bear the name Supergirl, but several characters were used to test the idea. It began with Lois Lane – Superwoman – in which Lois dreams she has gained superpowers thanks to a blood transfusion from Superman. In an issue of Superboy, an alien woman changes Clark into Claire, in order to teach him about respecting women, but reveals the whole thing was a dream at the end. Finally, a real woman Supergirl is created when Jimmy Olson wishes one into existence in order to help Superman, though the character dies by the end of the issue.
All of these were used to guage reader reaction to a new female superhero, and Supergirl herself – Kara – would debut in Action Comics #252, in May 1959. She has become a mainstay of the DC Comics universe ever since, appearing in her own collection of comics in a variety of forms and outfits, and in 1982 her own magazine was launched. Perhaps the biggest event in her timeline occurs during the Crisis on Infinite Earths event, in 1985, during which Supergirl dies during a huge explosion of half of the planet Krypton.
