However, since there were many people already living on the continent when he arrived, it is fairly obvious that the land had already been found by others quite a long time ago. Many people think Native Americans are one group of people, they are fact many distinct tribes and ethnic groups with distinct languages.

A stereotype is that these peoples were all hunter gatherers. While this is true of some, there were also many who cultivated crops. In the Northeast, there were primarily two main groups, the Iroquois and the Algonquians. The Algonquians lived in small villages along the coast where they fished and farmed crops. The Iroquois mostly lived along inland bodies of water in villages.
In the Southeast, many Native Americans grew maize, beans, tobacco and squash. The Plains Indians were farmers and hunters, but once the Europeans took over the land, many become nomadic. In the Southwest, farmers lived in permanent settlements with homes made of adobe. Other Southwest Indians, such as the Navajo and the Apache, were nomadic. In old Western movies, it is often the Apache or Navajo who are the troublesome Indians.
