Batman in TV and Movies
The Dark Knight first appeared on the screen in 1966, starring famous actor Adam West, whose original portrayal of Batman injected camp and humor into the dark stories. It ran for 120 episodes, ending in 1968. Other versions on the smaller screen include The Batman/Superman Hour, The Adventures of Batman, Super Friends, and The New Adventures of Batman.
Batman first appeared on the big screen in 1989. Batman was directed by Tim Burton and starred Michael Keaton as the title character, and Jack Nicholson as the Joker. The film spawned three sequels: Batman Returns, Batman Forever, and Batman & Robin. Val Kilmer and George Clooney replaced Keaton, and Joel Schumacher replaced Burton for the last two. In 2005, director Christopher Nolan rebooted the franchise with Batman Begins. Christian Bale starred as Bruce Wayne/Batman, and the film gained two sequels in The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, with Heath Ledger as the Joker, Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, and more. Ben Affleck began portraying Batman in the DC Extended Universe.
Batman in Comic Books
Batman's first appearance in comic books – and in popular culture – was Detective Comics #27, released in March 1939. His costume is dark, with blacks and grays, with a dash of blues and yellows to give it some style. He was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, and was based on classic pulp literature character Zorro. Unlike most superheroes, he has no supernatural powers, such as Superman's flight or Green Lanterns powerful ring. Instead, he has trained himself to the peak of physical fitness, is an expert detective, has an indomitable will, and is a genius with technology and machines, able to create helpful tools and devices such as his grappling hook, batarangs, and, most of all, his unique and useful Batmobile!
