We all know that with a new year comes new things. In 2014, we’re getting not one, but two movies about Hercules.
The first to premiere is Renny Harlin’s The Legend of Hercules (formerly known as Hercules: The Legend Begins and Hercules 3D). This film stars Twilight’s Kellan Lutz as the title character, making this one of his first big leading man roles.
We checked out the trailer to see what this new addition to the Hercules storyline was all about.
Check it out here:
So, let’s forget everything we know from the myths of Hercules because it looks like the filmmakers already did that. Hercules is known for so many things, from his 12 labours to his 4 wives to his rise to Olympus. Although there are stories of Hercules being sold as a slave and one of his wives was named Hebe but the writers, Daniel Giat, Giulia Steve and Sean Hood definitely took some creative liberties with their Hercules story.
What we’ve taken away from the trailer, ignoring the Gladiator-esque violence and questionable special effects, is that Hercules must return from exile in order to protect the woman he loves, Princess Hebe from entering in an arranged marriage with his brother in the name of peace. In order to do so, he has to embrace the powers bestowed upon him due to the fact that Zeus is his real father.
We hope to be pleasantly surprised by this movie when it premieres. The trailer didn’t stand out as something new and exciting. Each shot looked like it could’ve been from 300, Gladiator or Troy. Lutz might as well have been yelling “This is Sparta!”
Apparently, all you need to do is put on a Spartan or Gladiator costume and you’re instantly transported to ancient Greece, no matter how historically (in)accurate the circumstances may be.
The Legend of Hercules premieres January 10, 2014. How well do you predict this action/adventure movie to do in the box office?
