We are very pleased to announce the winner of our Pumpkin Carving Contest. Madhuri Kayastha is from Kent, Washington and is a student at Renton Technical College. Her imaginative pumpkin design stood out from the others for its originality and level of difficulty. She has been awarded with a $500 scholarship from Wholesale Halloween Costumes to put toward her education expenses.

The title of her artwork is Pumpkin Fire Fusion. Here is what Madhuri had to say about her winning carving:

“I found my inspiration from a traditional Indian festival called Karva Chauth, which was also this month. In my culture we do henna art on hands and feet for this event, so I decided to have my pumpkin henna themed. During the process, I was only going to do cutouts, but when I lit the candle I thought I could improve it by shading the entire pumpkin. I used a kids pumpkin carving kit which ended up breaking half way through the carving process eventually leading me to use a simple knife from my kitchen to complete it and make the finishing touches. It took me about 9 hours to complete- a two day process. I have taken quite a few art classes in college and high school but art is definitely a hobby- my skills and techniques were learned overtime. I have changed my career from medicine to Information Technology and plan to continue my education to get my Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology. My main goal is to finish school, attain a good position in the career I enjoy, and make sure my family is well set.”

The pictures speak for themselves:
