1920s Costume Party - Couples Costumes - Flappers and Gangsters

The end of another decade is fast approaching and we just can’t believe how time flies. What will the next decade have in store for us? While we can’t tell the future, we can take a look at the past. Just a mere century ago guys and gals were sitting there with the same thoughts. What would happen next? Little did they know that they were leaving 1919 behind and stepping into the Roaring Twenties!

The 1920s are known for a lot of things, making it a decade full of progress. With this decade came dramatic social and political changes, flare and freedom to women, and advances in science and technology. Prohibition moved the sale of alcohol underground. Women were free to vote. And the Harlem Renaissance gave the world jazz.

While it wasn’t all fun and games, it’s fun to remember the Roaring Twenties as such. Flappers enjoyed the musical stylings of jazz bands in speakeasies. And they did so in style.

As 2019 comes to a close, let’s take a page from the 1920s when it comes to celebrating the New Year.

From flapper fringe to zoot-suit stripes, get ready to party like it’s almost 1920 in some decade appropriate trendy outfits. Gangsters and molls alike will look especially dapper in the glad rags we’re showcasing here.

Start with the must-haves! A flouncy flapper dress for the lady and a zoot suit for the gent.

We dressed our gal in this Women’s Fashionable Flapper Costume. She paired it with a pair of flats, but for more fun, try these adorable t-strap Lucille Shoes. The best thing about the 1920s was the freedom and independence women embraced. They started expressing themselves more through their style. Don’t be afraid to customize a ready-made costume. Our model prefers to have her shoulders covered so she simply added a small cap sleeve in a coordinating fabric to the dress.

This Crime Boss Costume is the epidemy of gangster attire. The wide-lapel jacket paired with the pinstripes might cause a gum-shoe to start sniffing around. Want to really end up in the big house like Capone? Pair the outfit with a pair of these White and Black Oxford Shoes.

As flashy and fabulous as a flapper dress is, it’s the accessories that glam up the game. Shiny satin, sparkling sequins and flittering feathers all combine to bring that extra element of flare. Keep the accessories to a monochromatic color scheme for an even higher level of sophistication. Want to dress like our model moll? Pair your flouncy flapper dress with these Black Long Satin Gloves, this Black Deluxe Boa and these Black Beads. Then top off your bob with this Silver and Black Flapper Headband.

Fedoras and Tommy Guns are iconic fixtures for any gangster so we fit our gent with this Black Profelt Fedora as well as this Violin Case. The case is a great way to hint at the iconic firearm gangsters carried. If your guy prefers to be packing heat with something more obvious, there is a wide selection of Tommy Gun accessories here.

It’s not enough to simply dress as if you stepped out of 1920. Don’t forget to walk the walk and talk the talk. Learn the Charleston or Fox Trot and show off your moves as the smooth jazz plays on. Dance the night away and before you know it, you’ll be ringing in the new year. Maybe even with a kiss!

Brush up on your 1920s slang if you really want to play the part. Check out these slang terms and you’ll quickly find yourself gabbing your way back in time. Channel your inner Gatsby or Daisy Buchanan by reading The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald or watching the movie by Baz Luhrmann in the name of research. Remember, if you don’t have a gum-shoe sniffing around, you haven’t lived up to the frivolous and fun spirit of the Roaring Twenties yet.

But don’t have too much fun. At some point, gangsters usually get caught and head off to the can. Capture that moment with some fun photo booth props such as a height chart and mug-shot board. Make a name for yourself as the kingpin of the crew and you won’t have much to worry about in the big house. Al Capone’s cell in Eastern State Penitentiary looked pretty comfy as far as prison cells go.

There’s no better way to ring in the New Year than by throwing a decade-themed bash. Channel the exuberant, freewheeling essence of the Roaring Twenties for a New Year’s Eve celebration of the century.
