Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle DIY Weapons

Everyone knows the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They’re pizza-loving, ninjutsu-knowing, mutated turtles who spend most of their time hanging out in the sewers or using mixed martial arts to foil Shredder and his goons’ master plans to rule the world. The turtles are tutored by Splinter, a humanoid rat who also happens to be a master ninja. The turtles, although extremely proficient in ninjutsu, are oftentimes found utilizing weapons to aide them in their fights with Shredder.

Each of the turtles has their signature weapon – Donatello has his bo staff, Leonardo has his twin katana, Raphael has his saitachi, and Michelangelo has his nunchaku. We’ve all imagined ourselves as our favorite turtle, running around with their weapon and kicking evil butt, but it was always just in our imaginations – until now! These easy to make, DIY weapons will let you have yourself a merry old time pretending to be whichever turtle you grew up loving. Or, if your little one is a turtle fan, now he or she can get their turtle time on, all with a do-it-yourself craft you made at home! They’re also the perfect addition to any TMNT party, so the next time you have a ninja sewer themed throw down, make sure your party has them!

Donatello’s Bo Staff

TMNT Bostaff Supplies

  •  1/2” x 4′ tube pipe insulation (found at most hardware stores)
  • 1/2” diameter x 4ft wood dowel
  • Beige or tan duct tape
  • Wood grain duct tape
  • Scissors
  • Brown marker (optional)

TMNT Bostaff Step 01

Step 1. Place the wood dowel inside the pipe insulation. If the dowel is slightly shorter than the tubing, you can put pieces of crumpled newspaper in the ends to keep the dowel from sliding around.

Step 2. Cover the ends with pieces of wood grain duct tape.

Step 3. Cut 3 long vertical pieces of wood grain tape (approximately 22” long each). Wrap one half of the pipe insulation, with the tape, lining up the edges to be flush, not overlapping. Using long pieces will better give the illusion of a long piece of wood, and by only covering one half of the staff at a time, it will make it easier to keep the tape from sticking together. If there are any white edges where the tape is cut or ripped, use the brown marker to camouflage them.

Step 4. Repeat step 3 with the other end of the staff. It’s fine if the ends of the tape don’t meet in the middle.

TMNT Bostaff Step 02

Step 5. Cut a piece of tan duct tape (approximately 12” long), and fold in half lengthwise. The tape should stick to itself.

Step 6. Cut and fold a few more pieces of tan duct tape.

Step 7. Tape one end of the folded duct tape to the middle of the staff. Wrap the folded tape around the staff, and use more duct tape to secure the end.

Step 8. Continue adding and wrapping folded tape pieces around the staff to complete the grip.

Step 9. The bo staff is complete. The duct tape gives the illusion of wood, but the pipe insulation keeps the staff cushioned and safe to play with.

Leonardo’s Katana

TMNT Katana Supplies

  • 1/2” x 8” tube pipe insulation (found at most hardware stores)
  • 10” x 20” matte board
  • Spray adhesive
  • Craft knife
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Tan, silver, dark grey duct tape

TMNT Katana Step 01

Step 1. Measure one section of matte board 20” x 1.5” and two more sections 20” x 1.25” each.

Step 2. Cut out the pieces of matte board. Draw a curve on the end of each piece, and cut. This will make the end of the final blade look curved.

Step 3. Layer the 3 pieces of matte board together, so that the widest piece is in the middle. The pieces should be flush on 3 sides. Use the spray adhesive to attach the pieces together to create one long blade. The blade may still be a little flimsy until the next step.

Step 4. Apply a long strip of silver duct tape along the length of the blade, wrapping half of the tape on each side of the blade.

TMNT Katana Step 02

Step 5. Finish wrapping the blade in duct tape. Use long pieces of tape to minimize any visible seams. Use the craft knife to trim edges around the curved end of the blade. The tape will help make the blade less flimsy.

Step 6. Cut the insulation foam open about 4”, splitting it lengthwise. Sandwich the flat end of blade between the foam.

Step 7. Hold the foam and blade tightly closed together and wrap the handle with tan duct tape.

TMNT Katana Step 03

Step 8. To create the guard, measure a 3” x 4” piece of matte board, as shown. Round the corners of the guard. Measure a 1.5” x .25” section in the middle of the guard, large enough for the blade to fit through.

Step 9. Cut out the guard and the middle section. Cut a slit from the middle opening through one side of the guard.

Step. 10 Use the cut opening to slide the guard over the blade.

Step 11. Hold the guard closed and wrap in dark grey duct tape. The guard should fit snuggly, and will be attached to the handle more securely in a future step.

TMNT Katana Step 04

Step 12. Cut a piece of grey duct tape (approximately 12” long), and fold in half lengthwise. The tape should stick to itself.

Step 13. Cut and fold 3 more pieces of grey duct tape.

Step 14. Tape one end of a piece of folded duct tape, to the underside of the guard.

Step 15. Wrap the folded tape around the handle at an angle, and tape at the base, as shown.

Step 16.  Rotate the handle, attach the end a second piece of folded duct tape to the underside of the guard

and wrap around the handle, as shown.

Step 17. Repeat steps 15-16 applying the tape in the opposite direction. When complete the tape will create a woven look on the handle.

TMNT Katana Step 05

Step 18. Cover the bottom of the handle with a piece of silver duct tape. Wrap the top and base of the handle with a 1” strip of silver duct tape.

Raphael’s Sai

TMNT Sai Supplies

  • 2 – 1/2” x 5.5” pipe insulation tubing
  • Cardboard
  • Metallic silver spray paint
  • Crayola white model magic
  • Scissors
  • Marker
  • Craft knife
  • Sai template

TMNT Sai Step 01

Step 1. Download, print and cut out the template. Trace the template on the cardboard.

Step 2. Cut out the cardboard blade. Insert the long end of the cardboard blade into one end of the pipe insulation.

Step 3. Start by adding small pieces of model magic to the cardboard blade. Apply the model magic in a thin layer, that wraps around both sides of the cardboard.

Step 4. Finish wrapping the entire blade in the model magic.

Tip– you can use leftover pieces of cardboard to press down and smooth out the model magic to remove any finger marks. I also made a model magic diamond and applied it to the base of the blade. Let the model magic dry for a few hours.

Step 5. After the model magic has dried, spray the blade silver, and let dry. To achieve a shinier look, I found I needed 2 coats of spray paint. The first layer of paint was absorbed into the model magic and dried matte.

Step 6. Wrap the sai handle in tan duct tape. For a cleaner look, I applied my duct tape vertically, in 3 long pieces.

TMNT Sai Step 02

Step 7. Cut a piece of grey duct tape (approximately 8” long), and fold in half lengthwise. The tape should stick to itself.

Step 8. Cut the folded duct tape in half, lengthwise, to create 2 long skinny strips.

Step 9. Repeat steps 7-8 so that you end up with 4 long skinny pieces of folded tape.

TMNT Sai Step 03

Step 10. Tape one end of a piece of folded duct tape, to the top of the sai handle. Wrap the folded tape around the handle at an angle, and tape at the base, as shown.

Step 11.  Rotate the handle, and wrap a second piece of folded duct tape around the handle, as shown.

Step 12. Repeat steps 10-11 applying the tape in the opposite direction. When complete the tape will create a woven look on the handle.

Step 13. Cover the bottom of the handle with a piece of silver duct tape.

Ste 14. Wrap a ½ “ strip of silver duct tape around the base and the top of the handle for a finished look. Complete the set of sais by repeating the above steps to create a second sai.

Michelangelo‘s Nunchucks

TMNT Nunchuck Supplies

  • 1/2” x 4′ tube pipe insulation (found at most hardware stores)
  • 4 – 1/2”x 8” diameter wood dowels
  • 2 – 6” pieces of plastic chain (found at most hardware stores)
  • Metallic silver spray paint
  • 4 – Large eye hooks (large enough to fit the width of link on the chain)
  • Cutting pliers
  • Drill
  • Scissors or box cutter
  • Tan, silver, dark grey duct tape

TMNT Nunchuk Step 01

Step 1. Using the cutting pliers, cut an opening in the last link of each end of the chains.

Step 2. Spray paint the chains silver, let dry.

Step 3. Use the drill to make a hole in one end of each dowel. The holes should be large enough for the eye hooks.

Step 4. Attach an eye hook to the end of each dowel.

TMNT Nunchuk Step 02

Step 5. Cut the pipe insulation to the length of each dowel. Wrap each dowel in the pipe insulation.

Step 6. Cut a 1/2” piece of foam tubing. Cut out a chunk of the tubing so that it resembles the “letter C”, as shown.

Step 7. Use the cut piece of insulation to wrap around the base of the eye hook.

Step 8. Cover the tubing and the base of the eye hook with silver duct tape.

TMNT Nunchuk Step 03

Step 9. Wrap the nunchucks handle in tan duct tape. For a cleaner look, I applied my duct tape vertically, in 3 long pieces.

Step 10. Cut a piece of grey duct tape (approximately 12” long), and fold in half lengthwise. The tape should stick to itself.

Step 11. Cut and fold 3 more pieces of grey duct tape.

Step 12. Tape one end of a piece of folded duct tape, to the top of the nunchucks handle. Wrap the folded tape around the handle at an angle, and tape at the base, as shown.

Step 13.  Rotate the handle, and wrap a second piece of folded duct tape around the handle, as shown.

Step 14. Repeat steps 12-13 applying the tape in the opposite direction. When complete the tape will create a woven look on the handle.

TMNT Nunchuk Step 04

Step 15. Cover the bottom of the handle with a piece of silver duct tape. Wrap a ½ “ strip of silver duct tape around the base of the handle for a finished look.

Step 16. Wrap the top of the handle with another ½” strip of silver duct tape.

Step 17. Attach one end of the chain to the eye hook, by gently pulling open the cut link and then bending the link closed.

Step 18. To finish the nunchucks repeat steps 6-16, and attach the 2nd handle to the chain. Complete the set of nunchucks by repeating the above steps to create a second nunchucks.
