
Sonic the Hedgehog has been around since the early 90s as one of Sega’s best-known video game characters. The anthropomorphic blue hedgehog started out his saga battling the evil Doctor Eggman. With the numerous games, animated television shows and movies, this cute critter and his friends made fast work at weaseling into our hearts. He recently upgraded to a bigger screen, actually THE big screen in a movie starring Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic himself and Jim Carrey as the villainous Doctor Robotnik.
If your little racer is digging this blue spiny mammal, then break out your sewing needle and give a quick makeover to a blue hoodie to help them become Sonic the Hedgehog. This hoodie is an alternative to the officially licensed Sonic the Hedgehog costumes. It’s easy to wear any day, or every day!
After seeing the latest Sonic movie, we raced to our resident crafter, Tara from Spot of Tea Designs, to work her magic.
Supplies:
- Blue hoodie
- Felt – blue, tan
- Heat n Bond adhesives
- Iron
- Scissors
- Large Scrap paper
- Air erase pen
- Chalk
- Needle and glue thread
- Safety Pins
- Sonic the Hedgehog Template
First, lay the hoodie down and place a piece of the tan fabric over the stomach area. Draw a half-circle using the air erase pen.
Cut out this shape.
Lay the hood part of the hoodie down on a large piece of scrap paper. Draw (5) spikes as Sonic’s head with chalk.
Cut out this template, cutting a smaller curved shape at the bottom, as shown.
Print out the ear shapes from the printable template. Cut out the tan and blue shapes.
Use Heat n Bond to apply the tan circle on the front stomach area of the hoodie with an iron.
Adhere the ran ear pieces onto the blue ear pieces, as shown.
Have the child put the hoodie on and use chalk to draw lines where the ears and spikes will go.
Place the blue spikes along the chalk line and secure with safety pins. Use a needle and blue thread to secure in place while sewing.
Use fabric scissors to cut a hole along the lines for the ears. Insert the blue ears in the hole and attach them with needle and thread.
Remember to remove the safety pins before wearing the hoodie!
