For the last seven seasons, the characters of Game of Thrones have been warning that winter is coming. Finally, after all these years, winter is here. But that’s not a good thing for our favorite characters. For one, the writers are not afraid to kill off fan-favorite characters. Since the series is coming to an end after this season, we’re definitely going to have to say goodbye to the rest.
Winter is upon them and that means the White Walker army is breathing down their necks. The army of the dead even has a dragon on their side. However, now that Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen have joined forces, there’s hope for Westeros yet.
For those who aren’t from the North, Winter will be a shock to their systems. Hopefully, Winterfell will have furs to share. Or maybe Khalessi’s living dragons can keep their army warm.
Winter isn’t just cold. It’s dark too. While it might not be winter anymore when the final season of Game of Thrones premieres, it’ll be nice to have a themed luminary to light our way.
Follow along with these steps to recreate a Game of Thrones luminary to help get you in the spirit. Or maybe a Game of Thrones costume is more your speed. No matter how you plan to watch the final season, we know it will be a wild ride!
Materials You Will Need
- Thin, Straight tree branches (collected from outside or purchased from a craft store)
- Printable Vellum
- Deco Art Metallic Lustre Wax Metallic Finish – Gold Rush
- Battery operated LED puck light or tea lights
- Old stiff bristle paint brush
- Rubber Bands
- Hot Glue Gun
- GOT Sigils PDFs (below)
Step 2. Using the bristle brush apply the metallic lustre wax to the tree branches. This will transfrom them into beautiful gold branches.
Step 3. Cut out one sigil panel using the light gray lines as a guide for cutting. The panel will have 3 glue tabs on each side.
Step 4. Using the hot glue, attached a gold branch to one side of the panel. Center the branch so that about 1/2” of the branch is extending from both the top and bottom of the panel. Wrap the tabs around the branch as shown and glue the tabs into place.
Step 5. Repeat step 4 with the other side of the panel. Next hot glue the 2 remaining branches across the top and bottom of the panel, as shown.
Step 6. Repeat steps 2-5 to create 3 more panels. When making each additional panel, you will want to adjust The top and bottom branches of each panel so that when you connect 2 panels together the branches will fit nicely together. For example on one panel the top branch and bottom branch will be glued a little lower, and on another panel the top branch and bottom branch will be glued a little higher on the panel.
Step 7. Using rubber bands connect 2 panels together, as shown. Wrap the top branches together and the bottom branches together to form a 90 degree angle.
Step 8. Add a little bit of hot glue along the seam between the 2 panels.
Step 9. Add the other 2 panels using the rubber bands and hot glue. Once all the panels are together, brush the rubber bands with the metallic lustre wax. This will help camoflage the rubber bands.
Step 10. The luminary is complete. If the luminary sits a little uneven, trim the bottom branches to make them more even and make any final adjustments. The luminary should be a little bit rustic by nature, since the tree branches are naturally uneven, however this is part of the overall effect.
Step 11. Use an LED pucklight to illuminate the luminary. The black sigil printed on the white velumn will create a really nice effect.
