Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that Disney + debuted their streaming service with the launch of a new series, Star Wars: The Mandalorian, and with it, an overwhelming wave of love for the character Baby Yoda! Taking place 5 years after Return of the Jedi, this new series follows a Mandalorian bounty hunter on a mission from a well-paying man known as The Client. What’s the bounty? A child. Spoiler alert: the child turns out to be Baby Yoda! And just to set the record straight, the child isn’t really baby Yoda. Yoda died in Return of the Jedi, but the two are the same species. Apparently, the species has a very long childhood. Baby Yoda is actually 50 years old.
This series introduced a slew of new Star Wars characters to love, and also some to hate. But there’s no doubt that Baby Yoda captured everyone’s heart! Even those who didn’t watch the show probably saw the memes of the wide-eyed little Yoda-like alien. The little alien has definitely cemented their place in the ranks of beloved Star Wars characters that have come before.
We decided to get a jump on the inevitable. When pop culture finds a new hero, that hero becomes a costume. Baby Yoda deserves to be immortalized with the rest of the Star Wars Characters as a costume. First cut out the shapes for Baby Yoda’s ears from our template. Cut out the coordinating felt shapes using fabric scissors.
Fold the green fabric in half with the fold on the left-hand side. Lay the hoodie on top and use a water-erase pen or chalk to draw a rough outline of the shape. Go larger as you can always trim later!
Layer the pink inner ear on the green ear. Glue the green fabric piece on the top of the hood. Tip: Fold the fabric in on the front of the hoodie slightly so you don’t see the rough edge when worn.
Use a piece of chalk to draw a slit for the ear hole. Cut along this slit using fabric scissors. Fold the ears, as shown and use hot glue to secure the folded ear.
Insert the ears into the hole and secure them in place using hot glue.
Now create the cuff of Baby Yoda’s sleeves. Cut a long piece of tan fabric and fold it over, securing with safety pins.
Wrap around the sleeve end of the hoodie and secure it in place. Repeat for both cuffs.
Baby Yoda’s robe also has a high ruffled neck. Create this on your hoodie using a long piece of tan fabric and a smaller piece that will look like the ruffled cuff.
Wrap around the neck, securing in place with hot glue. Tip: make this piece a little longer than your actual neck size. Apply Velcro on both pieces so it can be attached in front of the face after zipping up the hoodie.
This is how it looks when velcroed together.
With a hoodie this adorable, fun shoes you must wear! Baby Yoda has some extended toes coming out of his robe. Create these shoes with pieces of Styrofoam shaped with a serrated knife.
Hot glue the toes into place on the green slippers.
Cut green felt and yellow felt in the shapes shown. Use hot glue to adhere the felt pieces over the foam shapes to create green toes with yellow nails.
Slide these slippers onto your feet and get ready to walk a (slow) mile in Baby Yoda’s shoes.
Sport the full Baby Yoda ensemble and become the cutest little alien in the galaxy.
See how well you do harnessing the force and recreating all the viral Baby Yoda memes!
